Stewart Honored with Public Service Award

Blood & Marrow Transplant Newsletter editor Susan Stewart received the American Society of Blood & Marrow Transplantation’s (ASBMT) 2000 Public Service Award at its annual meeting in Anaheim, California March 30th. The ASBMT is the professional society of bone marrow and stem cell transplanters in the US and Canada.

At an awards ceremony and dinner that honored transplant pioneers E. Donnell Thomas MD, George W. Santos MD and Robert Good MD, ASBMT president Allen Eaves MD recognized Stewart for “her contributions to public education in blood and marrow transplantation for the benefit of… patients and their loved ones.”

“It’s a very special honor,” says Stewart “which should be shared with the many people who have helped build Blood & Marrow Transplant InfoNet into a leading patient support organization.” She singled out BMT InfoNet administrator Carol Fradkin, and medical advisors Patrick J. Stiff MD and Martin S. Tallman MD for their generous contributions on behalf of patients.

“Carol works tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our organization running,” said Stewart. “And without the hundreds, probably thousands of hours donated by Drs. Stiff, Tallman and the many other health professionals who have helped us through the years, we would not be able to offer the high-quality publications and services we now have available for patients.”
