Free BMTS: The National Institutes of Health in Bethesda MD will perform bone marrow transplants for persons with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) in remission, chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in the chronic phase or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) free of charge. This new trans- plant program will study immune recon- stitution and the graft-versus-leukemia effect of T-cell add back following T-cell depletion BMT. BMT News in Spanish? We have received several calls from BMT centers interested in seeing the book "Bone Marrow Transplants: A Book of Basics for Patients" translated into Spanish. If your center would be interested in obtaining copies of the book in Spanish, please contact BMT Newsletter and let us know the number of books you would likely order, so we can determine whether or not translation is economically feasible.
St. Louis MO: St. Louis University Health Sciences Center offers a BMT orientation class on Wednesdays from 9 am to I pm for persons considering a BMT. For Children and Parents: "The Candlelighters Guide to Bone Marrow Transplants in Children" is now available from the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation. In addition to explaining the procedure and discussing what you and your child might expect before, during and after transplant, the book includes a list of important questions to ask the transplant center about your child's treatment and prognosis prior to admission. A single copy is available to families of children with cancer free of charge by writing Candlelighters, 7910 Woodmont Ave., Suite 460, Bethesda MD 20814-3015. The cost to all others in the US is $7.50, and $13.50 for persons outside the US.
