These questions and more are answered in a new 157-page book, Bone Marrow Transplants - A Book of Basics for Patients. The book is written by and for bone marrow transplant patients, with the help of medical specialists from more than 15 different bone marrow transplant programs throughout the U.S. Written in lay language, the book is designed to augment the information provided to patients by their physicians and BMT centers, and to help them "translate" the medical terminology they typically hear during the BMT experience.
A Resource Directory listing organizations that provide information, financial aid and psychological support for BMT patients and their families is included, as well as personal stories about bone marrow transplant patients and survivors.
Topics covered include: The Nuts and Bolts of BMT - An Introduction to Bone Marrow Transplants; Autologous BMTs; Allogeneic BMTs with a Related Donor; Allogeneic BMTs with an Unrelated Donor; Allogeneic BMTs with a Mismatched Donor; Peripheral Stem Cell Harvests and Transplants; What's Involved in Becoming a Bone Marrow Donor; Coping with the Stress of BMTs; Preparing Your Child for a BMT; Investions Post-Transplant; Graft-Versus-Host Disease; Liver Complications; Post-transplant infertility; Insurance Issues; Fundamentals about Blood Cells and Blood Tests; A Glossary of Terms.
When Deborah Weinstein-Stem learned her breast cancer had recurred, she worried about how her 4-year-old daughter, Mira, would cope during her mom's hospitalization. To prepare her for the month-long separation. and to give her a sense that other children faced and were coping with the same situation, Deborah wrote the warm and wonderful book Mira's Month.
This 38-page book, colorfully illustrated by Beth Roy, chronicles the events and feelings experienced by a child from the day she learns that her mom has cancer, to the day her mom returns home from the hospital. The book acknowledges the fears and questions children have when a parent is seriously ill, and offers the child hope and encouragement.
"Mira was a little girl, actually a big girl of four years old. She was happy in her life. It was full of friends, cousins, fun times, a wonderful house and backyard and two parents who loved her and were a lot of fun.
"One day Mira learned something hard to hear: Her Mom had cancer. Mira wondered how her Mom could have something serious like cancer. Her Mom didn't seem sick. She ran, went to work, laughed, kept the house clean, played with Mira...so...Mira was puzzled.
"One day Mira's Mom explained to her that she had to go to the hospital for a whole month to get some very strong medicine to the fight the cancer inside her ... When Mira heard about the month in the hospital, she felt like crying. So did her Mom. How was Mira going to get along without her Mom for a whole month?"
The story goes on to describe what Mira saw and felt while her Mom was in the hospital: her mother's weight loss, hair loss and fatigue, which people assured her was temporary; the special love of her father, aunts and uncles while Mom was away; a comforting hug from her teachers whenever she felt sad; and a growing pride in the fact that she could do many things for herself while Mom was away.
After Deborah returned home from the hospital, she and Mira decided to share their special book with other children whose parent was being hospitalized for cancer. Thanks to a grant from The Auxiliary Foundation of the Woman's Club of Evanston, Mira's Month is now available exclusively from BMT Newsletter.
